Mayo Elementary has embarked on an exciting professional development journey with our new text, “Instructional Strategies to Move Learning Forward.” This book focuses on the powerful framework of Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR), a research-based approach that strategically shifts learning ownership from teacher to student. During our first session, we focused specifically on the "focused instruction" component, which is the critical first phase where teachers model, demonstrate, and make their thinking visible to students. This foundational stage sets the stage for everything that follows in the learning process, and our teachers are already beginning to see how intentional, explicit instruction creates a strong scaffold for student success

.As we explored the focused instruction section together, our discussions centered on how we can provide students with thoughtful and meaningful instruction that goes beyond simply delivering content. We looked at strategies for clearly articulating learning targets such as Think-Alouds, Visual Walkthroughs, Gesturing, Exemplars, Simulations. Teachers left the professional development equipped with concrete techniques to strengthen the opening moves of their lessons which they can put into action with their students tomorrow. This is just the beginning of our work with GRR, and we're eager to continue building our collective expertise in moving learning forward for every student.
